The Best Homemade Chocolate Granola Recipe

We have a love-hate relationship with this granola. We love it because it’s seriously the tastiest option you’ll ever find.

However, we hate it, because we seriously have no self-control when it’s in the house. Like, none. We eat it straight out of the jar. Pour it into a bowl with almond milk. Sneak bites all the live long day. Justify late-night bowls of granola and almond milk. You get the picture.

It’s addicting in the best way. Plus, it’s quick and easy to make and combines just six wholesome ingredients! This isn’t a low-calorie granola, but it is wholesome, nonetheless.

Even better, you won’t find any refined sugar or unnecessary preservatives. Just pantry staples you probably have on hand. This is great because you’ll probably be making this dark chocolate granola recipe again and again!

Storebought vs. Homemade Granola

Of course, you can find lots of granola at your local grocery store. It’s convenient and usually really tasty. However, pre-made granola often contains lots of unnecessary ingredients like sugar, seed oils, and preservatives.

BUT when you make granola at home, you only need a few ingredients. That means you can easily customize it to suit your flavor preferences and dietary needs. Plus, it’s a lot more affordable to make it on your own.

Ingredients and Substitutions

  • Coconut Oil – Melted butter or light olive oil will also work.
  • Creamy Almond Butter – Feel free to substitute any nut or seed butter you like best. Peanut butter, cashew butter, pecan butter – they all work!
  • Raw Unfiltered Honey – You can also use maple syrup, but the granola is less likely to form clumps.
  • Old-Fashioned Oatmeal (Rolled Oats) – Quick oats are great, too but create a little more of a crumbly consistency. Make sure to use certified gluten-free oats if you need your dark chocolate granola to be gluten-free.
  • Dark Chocolate Chips – We love to use 85% dark chocolate. We prefer the pureness of super dark chocolate bars because there are minimal ingredients and very little sugar but tons of chocolate flavor. The richness is just so good too! However, any dark chocolate or chocolate chips will work.
  • Sea Salt – Don’t skip this! It brings out the flavor of the chocolate, creating a drool-worthy sweet and savory combination.

Optional Mix-Ins

One of the best things about making granola at home is that you can mix and match anything you have on hand! Feel free to experiment to make this recipe your own.

Some of our favorite additions include:

  • M&M’s
  • Dried Fruit (raisins, dried blueberries, dried strawberries, etc.)
  • Chia Seeds
  • Pumpkin Seeds
  • Flax Seeds
  • Chopped Nuts

How to Make Chocolate Almond Butter Granola

Before you begin, preheat your oven, and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  1. Whisk the wet ingredients. In a medium bowl, whisk the melted coconut oil, almond butter, and honey.
  1. Add the dry ingredients. Pour in the oatmeal, and whisk to combine and coat.
  1. Spread. Pour the oatmeal onto the prepared baking sheet, spreading it out evenly.

  1. Bake. Transfer the mixture to the oven, and bake for 15 minutes. Then, stir, and continue to back for exactly five minutes. You know your granola is done when it’s fragrant and golden brown.

Note: Do NOT go over five minutes! This recipe can go from done to burnt in 5.3 seconds. Really. So, be sure to keep a close eye on it!

  1. Rest. Remove the granola from the oven, and let it cool. Do not stir! Otherwise, those delicious clusters won’t form.
  2. Top. Scatter the chopped chocolate pieces evenly over the top of the warm granola. Once melty, sprinkle the sea salt on top.
  1. Cool completely. Let your salted dark chocolate granola cool for a couple of hours and harden completely. Feel free to pop it in the freezer to speed up the process. Then, crumble it up, and enjoy!

What Do You Eat with Chocolate Granola?

If we’re being totally honest, more often than not, we eat this granola straight from the jar. However, some of our favorite ways to serve it include:

  • In a bowl with milk (like cereal)
  • Sprinkled over yogurt
  • As an ice cream topper
  • On top of a bowl of oatmeal!

How to Store

  • Store leftover dark chocolate granola in an airtight container at room temperature for two to three weeks.
  • Freeze granola for up to six months to preserve the crunch! Thaw it at room temperature to serve.

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together melted coconut oil, almond butter, and honey. Add oatmeal and mix to combine.
1/4 cup coconut oil, melted, 1/4 cup almond butter, 1/4 cup honey, 3 cups old fashioned oatmeal
  • Pour coated oatmeal onto parchment paper lined baking sheet. Spread out evenly. (While the granola is baking, coarsely chop the dark chocolate bar into small pieces.)
  • Bake for 15 minutes, then stir granola. Set oven timer for another 5 minutes. The granola will go from not done to burnt in 5.3 seconds, so keep an eye on it. Seriously! The granola is done when you can start to smell it and it has turned a golden brown. Mine bakes in exactly 20 minutes, but every oven is different and yours may take a little more or a little less time to brown.
  • Remove baked granola from oven and don’t stir it! Too much stirring will not allow for the large yummy granola clusters to form.
  • Then evenly scatter coarsely chopped chocolate pieces on top of the warm granola. The chocolate will melt into the oats and be evenly distributed when you are eating it. Otherwise, if you add the chocolate after it is cooled, the chocolate pieces tend to fall to the bottom of the jar.

  • To finish, lightly sprinkle a little flaked sea salt on top of the warm chocolatey granola. Use your discretion. A little bit goes a long ways and you can always add more if you need to. The contrast of the sweet and salty is absolutely delicious!

  • Let the granola cool for 1-2 hours to allow the chocolate to harder. I sometimes pop it in the freezer if I am in a hurry. Store in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks.
