Ingredients in bowls on a white marble countertop for green bean casserole.
  • Cream of Chicken Soup – We use our easy homemade cream of chicken soup, but you can substitute canned condensed cream of chicken soup if preferred.
  • Soy Sauce – Adds a salty, umami taste. Coconut aminos will also work if you need to keep this recipe gluten-free.
  • Black Pepper – Adjust to taste.
  • Green Beans – To keep things quick and easy, we use canned French-style green beans. No washing, snapping, or trimming required!
  • French Fried Onions – It wouldn’t be green bean casserole without the crispy fried onions on top! Use canned crispy onions, or make homemade crispy onions instead

Possible Variations

  • Feel free to add shredded cheddar cheese to the filling for extra savoriness and a gooey texture.
  • Swap the cream of chicken soup with condensed cream of mushroom soup for a vegetarian option.
  • Add sautéed minced garlic or shallots for an extra savory, pungent taste.
  • Use fresh green beans that have been trimmed and cut into bite-sized pieces.

Common Questions

Can I make this casserole ahead of time?

Yes! You can prepare this recipe a day in advance. To do so, assemble all the ingredients in a baking dish, leaving off the crispy onions. Then, cover it with foil, and store it in the fridge. When you’re ready to bake, add the onions, and bake as normal, adding a few minutes as needed.

How long does homemade green bean casserole last?

Stored in an airtight container, leftovers will stay fresh in the fridge for up to 3 days.

The casserole can be reheated, but the fried onions will not be crispy if using the microwave. Instead, preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Then, place the desired portion into an oven-safe dish, and cover tightly with aluminum foil. Reheat for 20 minutes for small portions or up to 40 minutes for larger portions. Uncover, and allow the fried onions to crisp up again for 5-10 more minutes in the oven.

Can I freeze leftovers?

No, we don’t recommend freezing this recipe as it separates and alters in flavor once thawed.
