They have all the taste and texture you love and are completely foolproof. We make them at least once a week, pairing them with blackened cod for a restaurant experience at home.
Ingredients and Notes

- Flour – All-purpose flour forms the base of the dough. However, we’ve also tested a 1:1 all-purpose gluten-free flour, and it works just as well.
- Leaveners – We use both baking powder and baking soda for soft, fluffy biscuits. Make sure they’re fresh, or your biscuits won’t rise!
- Sweetener – We use monk fruit sweetener to keep the sugar content low, but granulated sugar works just as well.
- Spices – Salt enhances all the ingredients, and garlic powder creates the bold, garlicky flavor we want without the hassle of mincing garlic cloves.
- Sharp Cheddar Cheese – Using freshly shredded cheese works best in this recipe opposed to store-bought pre-shredded cheese that has a powdery coating and doesn’t melt as nicely. For a slightly different taste, substitute Pepper Jack cheese, mozzarella, or Monterey Jack instead.
- Buttermilk – This helps the biscuits rise and adds a satisfying tangy taste. Use store-bought buttermilk, or make homemade buttermilk with milk and lemon juice or white vinegar.
- Butter – We recommend salted butter for this recipe.
- Herbed Butter Topping – Combine melted butter, garlic powder, and dried parsley, and brush it over the biscuits for a rich flavor and herbaceous taste. This is what makes our homemade cheddar garlic biscuits even better than restaurant options!
How to Make Homemade Garlic Cheddar Biscuits

- Combine. Whisk the dry ingredients in a large bowl. Then, add the shredded cheese, and toss to combine. Stir in the wet ingredients just until well incorporated. Be careful not to overmix! The batter will likely look a little lumpy, and that’s totally okay.

2. Portion. Use a cookie scoop to portion the batter, and place it on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet, leaving space between each piece.

3. Bake. Transfer the biscuits to a heated oven, and bake until they’re golden brown.

4. Top. While the biscuits bake, whisk the topping ingredients in a small bowl. Brush it over the baked cheesy garlic biscuits while they’re still hot, and enjoy!
Serving Suggestions
There’s not much these garlic cheddar biscuits don’t pair well with! Enjoy them as a side dish or appetizer with seafood or your favorite main course. Some of our favorite options include one-pot gumbo jambalaya, easy pasta all’amatriciana, or sheet pan bruschetta chicken.
Common Questions
Make sure to use fresh leaveners, avoid overmixing, and allow your oven plenty of time to reheat!
We don’t recommend it! They don’t tend to thaw or reheat well and are best served right away.
