What Are Blended Overnight Oats?

Exactly what they sound like! Blended overnight oats are made just like traditional overnight oats. However, instead of just combining all the ingredients in a jar, we blend them first. This creates a smooth, almost pudding-like consistency.

Transfer the mixture to an airtight container, and you’ve got a quick meal prep option perfect for healthy breakfast, snacks, or even desserts. Plus, when you add fun mix-ins your picky eaters won’t even realize it’s healthy. They’ll just think they’re eating a treat!

Recipe Ingredients and Substitutions

Separate cups of ingredients for funfetti blended overnight oats on a white marble countertop.
  • Unsweetened Almond Milk – Feel free to substitute any milk you like best such as cow’s milk, oat milk, cashew milk, or even coconut milk.
  • Old-Fashioned Rolled Oats – Opt for certified gluten-free oats if you need to keep this recipe gluten-free. Avoid quick oats or steel-cut oats as the texture of the oats won’t be the same.
  • Protein Powder – We use a vanilla whey protein powder but feel free to swap it out for vegan protein. Or, experiment with different flavors. Add more milk as needed to achieve your desired consistency.
  • Plain Greek Yogurt – We use non-fat Greek yogurt, but higher fat will creat an even thicker consistency and ultra-creamy texture.
  • Ground Flax Seed – These add healthy fats and fiber. Feel free to substitute chia seeds if preferred.
  • Cake Batter Extract – This really contributes to the “cake” flavor of the oats! You can typically find it in the baking or spice sections of your local grocery store.
  • Sprinkles – Add these in for pops of color and a true funfetti effect.

How to Make Blended Overnight Oats

  1. Combine the ingredients. Add the milk, oats, protein powder, yogurt, flaxseed, and cake batter extract to a blender. Pulse until smooth. Pour in the sprinkles, and stir to combine.
  1. Chill. Pour the oats mixture into jars with a lid (such as mason jars), and chill in the fridge.
  2. Serve. Add your favorite toppings, and enjoy cold!

Flavor Variations

The great thing about this recipe is that the flavor options are endless! Feel free to mix and match different ingredients to make it your own. To get you started, some of our favorite options include:

  • Pumpkin – Add pure pumpkin puree, cinnamon, nutmeg, and pumpkin pie spice for a fall-inspired twist.
  • Chocolate – Stir in cocoa powder or your favorite chocolate chips
  • Seed or Nut Butter  – Almond butter, peanut butter, cashew butter, or sunflower butter all add extra flavor and healthy fats.
  • Fruit – Fresh berries, bananas, etc.
  • Nuts and Seeds
  • Spices – Cinnamon, cardamom, ground ginger, and nutmeg are all great options for a bit of extra warmth.
  • Extracts – Add to or swap the cake batter extract with almond extract or vanilla extract.
  • Sweetener – Incorporate honey or maple syrup if you prefer your oats extra sweet.
  • Toppings – Serve your blended overnight oats with extra sprinkles, whipped cream, granola, or any other topping you like best!
